Sage Green Kitchen with Patchwork Patterned Backsplash
Full-height patchwork patterned backsplash over sage green cabinets
Walkthrough of the install
Specifying a patchwork backsplash
Patchwork tile looks random in a product photo. Install it that way and it looks chaotic. We dry-laid the full backsplash on the floor before setting a single tile — moved patterns around so no two heavily-patterned tiles ended up next to each other, and spread the darker tiles evenly across the field. The install reads as collected rather than dumped.
Working around outlets and the window
Patchwork patterns don't forgive sloppy outlet cuts. Each tile has its own pattern running in its own direction, so a crooked cutout jumps out immediately. We used a diamond hole saw for round cutouts and dry-fit every tile that bordered an outlet before setting it in mortar.
Keeping the room from feeling overwhelmed
A busy backsplash needs calm everything-else. Sage green shaker cabinets in a solid matte finish, plain warm wood countertops, and brass pulls — nothing competing with the pattern. The result has one visual focal point and knows what it is.
