Floor Tile Installation

Modern kitchen with large-format gray marble-look porcelain floor tiles and sleek cabinetry

The Floor Is the Foundation

Floor tile takes more abuse than any other tiled surface. Foot traffic, dropped items, furniture movement, and in San Antonio's climate, the thermal cycling between air-conditioned interiors and hot outdoor temperatures — these all stress the tile and the substrate beneath it. A floor that was set correctly holds up through all of it. One that wasn't will start showing cracks at the grout lines, then at the tile edges, then at the tiles themselves.

The difference is almost always in the prep.

What Makes Floor Tile Work Different

Large-format floor tile — anything 18 inches or larger on a side — requires back-buttering in addition to setting it into a mortar bed. Back-buttering means applying thinset to the back of the tile as well as the floor, so there are no voids underneath. A void under a large tile creates a soft spot that will eventually crack under weight. The TCNA (Tile Council of North America) standard requires at least 95% mortar coverage for wet areas and 80% for dry areas. We aim for full coverage across the board.

For wood-framed floors, we also check deflection. If the floor bounces, the tile will crack. Solutions include adding a layer of plywood, installing a decoupling membrane, or in some cases sistering the joists below. We identify these issues before setting a single tile.

Common Floor Tile Applications

Kitchen Porcelain, large-format Subfloor flatness, transition to adjacent flooring
Bathroom Porcelain, stone Waterproofing at perimeter, small-format for shower floor
Entryway Ceramic, stone, cement tile Threshold transitions, exterior-grade for covered entries
Outdoor Patio Porcelain (frost-rated) Slope for drainage, frost-resistant tile, exterior mortar
