Kitchen Backsplash Installation

Kitchen backsplash with mixed geometric and hexagon patterned tiles behind white cabinetry

A kitchen backsplash is one of the most visible tile surfaces in a home. It's also one of the more technically demanding to install well. The backsplash has to work around outlets, switches, range hoods, windows, and cabinet edges — all while maintaining consistent grout spacing and keeping the layout visually centered.

We've installed everything from classic three-by-six subway tile to hand-painted Moroccan patterns to large-format slabs that run from counter to cabinet without a single seam. The material changes; the precision doesn't.

Common Questions About Backsplash Tile

Do I need to remove the old backsplash first?
In most cases, yes. Tiling over existing tile adds thickness that can interfere with outlet depth, outlet covers, and the transition between the backsplash and countertop edge. There are exceptions — if the existing tile is perfectly flat, well-bonded, and the added thickness won't cause problems — but we assess this during the estimate rather than assuming.
How do you handle outlets and switches in the backsplash area?
Carefully. Outlets in a backsplash area typically need outlet extenders added to bring the receptacle face flush with the new tile surface. We cut tile precisely around the box, and the outlet cover plates sit flush. This is detail work that matters for both appearance and code compliance.
What tile patterns work well in a kitchen?
Horizontal running bond (offset subway) is the most forgiving — it's tolerant of slightly out-of-square walls and reads as clean and intentional. Vertical stacks look modern but require walls to be very plumb. Diagonal layouts add visual interest but create more cuts and more waste. Patterned tile like cement or encaustic looks striking but needs careful layout planning so the pattern is centered and balanced on the wall. We walk through options with you before anything gets ordered.
