Moroccan Patchwork Backsplash Behind a Gas Range

Walkthrough of the install
Pattern distribution across the field
Patchwork patterns go wrong when the heaviest-pattern tiles cluster. We laid the entire backsplash on a flat surface before setting any tile, pulled out the three or four most dramatic tiles, and spread them evenly across the field. The field reads as deliberately composed rather than randomly assembled.
Heat and grease behind a pro range
A five-burner gas range throws a lot of heat and spatter at the wall behind it. The tile has to handle both. Glazed porcelain patchwork tiles are durable enough and easy to wipe down — soap and water, no special cleaners. The grout joint had to be an epoxy formulation in the high-splatter zone directly behind the burners; regular cement grout stains too easily from oil.
Terminating the field cleanly
The backsplash runs from the countertop up to the under-cabinet lighting and stops cleanly with a bullnose edge where it meets the open wall on the far side. No awkward L-trim, no visible cut edge. The pattern just ends and the wall takes over.
